Editorial of April 2000

Diyarbakir, Hasankeyf, Elazig, Istanbul...

There was no Newroz in Istanbul : it was forbidden because of the "W" printed on the poster of the Hadep party ! As "W" is not Turkish, the local "Wali" (governor) forbid the feast and some hundred of Kurds celebrated the First Day put under custody.

In spite of all that, the atmosphere was much more calm this year and the Newroz was celebrated in different places. In Diyarbakir for example, where everybody agreed that the feast was magnificent.

Diyarbakir - March 2000

In Kurdistan, summer is already arrived and the country is always splendid but the social climate stays contradicted : détente and hope of peace in Diyarbakir, mistrust in Hasankeyf (in the event of we would be there for preserving the Kurdish historical place, which must be destroyed by the building of a dam), to befollowed by cops in Elazig and impossibility to enter in Dersim which is closed and systematically shelled by the Turkish army.

Hasankeyf - March 2000

Since last year, the changes took place as they were predicted, steps forward peace and democracy were realized and it seems that Turkey is ont he way to change. But under the European mask, there are persecution, torture, political prisonniers and millions of people in exile.... who need immediate help.
