Before as after his capture, the Kurdish leader, Abdullah Öcalan, wished always a real democracy in Turkey. In this country, opponents are muzzled and 20millions people are denied and sumit every day brutal repression. Why this people should not have the right to pseak its own language, to teach its culture to future generations and to have its own identity ? According to international laws, is it not a right struggle ? Abdullah Öcalan fights for peace, for democracy, and represents a symbol of freedom and peace for all his people. According to the Turkish state, he could be condemned to capital punishment for "high treason ". The violent way in with he is judged violates the fundamental rules of international rights, and in the same time, a real war is lead against the Kurds : thousands people were killed, des millions were obliged to leave their land. Thousands of villages have been evacuated and destroyed. For all these reasons, the European countries should react for finding a pacific and democratic solution to the Kurdish Question in Turkey. They should exige the respect of conventions, especially European conventions and the application of a negotiate solution. Like every people, the Kurds must obtain the recognition of their political and civic rights, the right to education and to their culture, in a frame of specific institutions that will not attack the territorial integrity of the Turkish Republic. This pacific process needs to stop military actions and the refugees’return in their homeland. During the last elections, in April, though many pressures and the impossibility to lead its campaign, the HADEP, a pro-Kurdish legal party, did win 37 mayoralties with near to 65 % of votes in many towns. Unfortunately, a lot of members were arrested, and the electoral treacheries did not allow them to reach the 10 % that are necessaries for sitting in the Parliament. The European authorites and the U.N asked many times to Turkey to respect its engagements concerning the Human’s rights and the rights of minorities, but with no results till now. At an international level, resolving the Kurdish Question depends on the responsiblitiy of Europe, that has to find a political and global solution for setting in a permanent peace in Turkey and for the interests of the Turkish and Kurdish peoples will be considered. The European community should act for stopping the conflict in this country. Peace progresses in Kosovo : Why a diplomatic intervention of European countries and United States is not possible in Kurdistan ? Turkey wished to join Europa : Do not its partners feel the moral duty to guarrant peace and the respect of Human’s rights from one of their allies ? The Kurds hope to live in peace and freedom. Elsewhere, an intervention for stopping a conflict was quick and efficient : Why not in Turkey ? Mazlum Firat - June 1999 |
